Reality vs. Fantasy

This week we are working on two skills during reading: the genre fantasy and drawing conclusions. Today we began by talking about the difference between reality (or realism) and fantasy. Our class made a list of things that characters COULD NOT do in real life. A few of the things included: a person flying, x-ray vision, magic, animals talking, animals doing human things (like using utensils, dancing, etc.)and a nose growing like in Pinochhio. Each child then had a realism and fantasy assignment: think of an animal, and write/draw about the animal doing something that’s real and something that’s fantasy. The kids ROCKED it. I think they are really starting to grasp the difference between realism and fantasy – what do you think? 🙂

A husky can pull a sled. But a husky can’t dance at a disco party.

A roach can spray. But a roach can’t join the army.

Tomorrow we will finish our initial “light” studies, and I can’t wait to show you! Stay tuned…
