We have been working diligently on discovering all of the various communities that we are a part of. Over the past week each child completed a “Community Circle Map” (pictures coming soon!) that show our communities from the smallest (our school) to the biggest (our planet). One of our first grade standards states that the children should be able to name and locate the 7 continents and 4 main oceans. This standard ties in so well so our communities study! Ms. Broughton took the lead on teaching the class about what the 7 continents are and where they are located. She read a non-fiction text and had the students help to label a world map.
Each child then took their newly acquired knowledge and practiced independently to identify each continent and ocean.
The following day we learned a chant to help us remember the names of the continents (ask your child if they can remember how it goes 🙂 ) and completed another activity where the students were responsible for naming and correctly placing our 7 continents. Our little worlds turned out pretty cute if I don’t say so myself 🙂
Next week we will complete our summative project for our unit “Who We Are” and pick a piece to put into our IB portfolio. Hope you have a great weekend 🙂
