Comparing Numbers

In math we have been working to understand place value. One aspect of place value is comparing numbers. We learned new symbols for comparing numbers: > (greater than), < (less than), and = (equal to … we already knew the meaning of this one 🙂 ) As we compared numbers numbers, we found little tricks to help us along the way. One of the most useful was turning the greater than and less than symbol into an alligator — alligators always want MORE food, so the alligator will always  be “chomping” the bigger number. Many of the kids chose to draw little teeth and an eyeball on their symbols as they worked independently to compare number; this helped them remember which way the symbol went!

One extension activity we did involved making our new symbols and comparing numbers using numerals and base ten blocks. We have learned so many ways to represent numbers!! Here are some finished products:
