Let’s Measure!

We have finished Units 1 and 2 of our Math curriculum and are starting a new unit…one that is very fun and hands-on … measurement! We began this unit with a challenge: in a small group, with only ONE piece of 8.5×11 paper, scissors, and glue … which group can make the longest strip of paper? We talked about how cutting right away would not be the smartest use of materials. Each group had to communicate, plan, and then proceed with their challenge. With a 15 minute time limit, groups had to work efficiently. Many of the groups chose to assign different people to different jobs — one cutter, one gluer (is that a word?), and a planner. What a great idea! We had one clear winner at the end, but ALL groups did a fantastic job with this inquiry based lesson 🙂

Our winning group! Thumbs up for Nathan, Gaby, and Keyuri! 🙂
