Woohoo! We survived the first day! 🙂 I hope your kids came home happy, tired, and wanting to come back tomorrow! Here are some snapshots from our day:
The day began with the children drawing a self portrait. We later worked together to fill our some “first day information” about each child. Here are a few adorable examples. Check out Grant’s favorite food — I love Mexican too, buddy!
We read one of my favorite books, “David Goes to School”, and used David’s naughty behavior to think of rules we can make for our class. After hearing some of the stuff David did, it was easy to know exactly what we SHOULD do here at Jackson! We made our “Essential Agreements” poster and hung it up near our clip chart where it will stay all year.
The class participated in a listening activity where I gave directions on how to draw the character “David”…they had to listen closely and draw what I said. Tomorrow we will finish the project by writing one of our essential agreements in a speech bubble. Pictures of the final product coming tomorrow 🙂
One other activity we completed involved the book “First Day Jitters” and a discussion about what made us nervous on this first day of school. I really enjoy reading this book because the character who is so nervous ends up being the teacher 🙂 It’s a great thing for the kids to hear that teachers get nervous, too! We made an anchor chart about things that made us nervous and each child did a writing and drawing about what made them nervous today. Click on each picture to make it bigger so you can check out the writing — very impressive!
While the kids were working diligently, I surprised them with a special treat — Jitter Juice! Not sure what Jitter Juice is? It’s a magic drink that helps the butterflies fly right out of your tummy 🙂 After drinking our Jitter Juice I think it’s safe to say that we were not nervous any more!
We had a few minutes before lunch where I let the kids play inside and meet new friends. Some were shy and didn’t want their picture taken, but in time I’m sure they all will 🙂 Here are some cuties enjoying themselves.
Enjoy your evening! 🙂
