Social Studies has been filled with goods, services, needs, wants and action! Our class really enjoyed learning what goods and services are and thinking about businesses in our community and how they provide us with goods or services (or sometimes both!). Here are some anchor charts we made to help us remember that goods are things we can use or consume. and services are things that people do for us.
The kids took their newly acquired knowledge and constructed “Goods and Services” roads, where they had to draw different businesses – sorting them by whether they provided goods or a service. No surprise to me, they turned out beautiful (I really am going to miss this amazingly artistic class 🙂 )
We watched a BrainPopJr. clip on “Needs and Wants” and created a T-chart in our discovery notebook to sort some items. After learning about the needs of plants and animals, most students were able to name the things that humans need (although at first we did have a few random things like “GPS” – hah!).
A follow-up activity was to have the kids think about their “wants” column. Their job was to create and design a product that someone would like to have, but doesn’t need to survive. They had to come up with a name, a picture, a description of the item, and a price.
I hope you received by letter about Beatrice’s Goat! I am excited to put our knowledge of goods, services, needs, and wants to use by earning money to buy a family in need something that will change their lives! 🙂
