Patterns are Comprised of Systems

I am loving how all of our subject areas are focused around one central theme. During our first unit, our class really understood how math, science, social studies, and language arts worked around the theme “Relationships Connect Communities”. As we begin our second unit, our theme changes pretty drastically. “Patterns are Comprised of Systems” is our central idea for unit two.

To get us thinking about what this theme could mean, we checked out our Inquiry Table at the end of the hallway. We looked at the items and tried to get an idea of what the central idea could entail.

Such good little scientists 🙂

When we came back to fill out our anchor chart, we easily could say that patterns can be shapes and colors – thanks to our math studies! One student even mentioned that units of patterns can be different. We added some ideas about weather patterns, weather tools, and even how a system keeps repeating. I challenged our class to add a few things to our chart every week when we notice our studies match the theme. Here’s what we have so far:

I’ll update you more once we really get into the thick of things 🙂

Hope everyone had a great weekend.
